Its unique timbre and versatility have made it a popular instrument in various music genres, from classical and jazz to folk and world music. Nancy Nourse’s arrangements are always well done–this is one of my favorites.The flute is one of the most ancient and enchanting instruments, known for its soothing and uplifting sound. (Prelude, Sarabande, Gavotte, Air, Rigadon) Holberg Suite, The (Aus Holberg Zeit)–5 mvmts. Nice variety of styles in the 5 movements. One movement features the altos and 1st Flutes. Greek Tableaux (Endymion, the Shepherd, Pan and the Dryads, Marsyas, the Satyr, Alpheus and Arethusa, the Two Rivers, Pegasus, the Winged Horse) Medley with jazzy rhythms and fun to play and listen to. Well scored with all parts of equal difficulty. This piece is an arrangement of four Irish songs in separate movements (two are fast and two are slow and gorgeous). This works well for flute choir and sounds gorgeous. Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, Elijah Rock, Wade in the Water, Everytime I Feel the Spiritįour Renaissance Motets (O Magnum Mysterium, O Quam Gloriosum, O Vos Omnes, Ave Maria) This makes a good opener, or closer.īeautifully written–really sounds like the “”burbles”” of a fountain. Spanish March with optional castanets & triangle parts. (Serenade, Romanze, Menuetto, & Rondo)īeautiful! You need a good expressive piccolo player for the gorgeous solo passages. ![]() Good arrangement of one of my favorite tunes.Įine Kleine Nachtmusik–4 mvmts. Each player’s entrance is staggered, which produces a great antiphonal effect. This makes a great opener to a program with the flute choir surrounding the audience. Is written in 6/8, with some interspersed measures of 3/4. Makes a good opener or closer to a program. Programmatic original piece in 5 movements. Our group loves to play this because all of the parts are fun.Ĭloud Images (Rising Above the Clouds, Billowing Clouds, Oh Look! There’s an Alligator!, With Your Head in the Clouds, Through a Sea of Clouds) As I recall, the two picc parts are pretty high in the range. Written in 2 sections: slow section is meditative and peaceful, fast section is 7/8 alternated with occasional 3/4 time–a wild ride through the rapids of the Colorado RiverĬontemporary, but accessible. My taste is pretty eclectic, and you’ll find a mixture of arrangements of familiar tunes, transcriptions, as well as a LOT of original music written for flute ensembles. What I’ve tried to list here is music that I like and think is well-written and well-scored for flute ensembles. I have tried to give some information about the difficulty level of the music listed, but just because a piece is listed as “Easy”, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s not worthy of being played by a professional ensemble.
